What is Diceware?

Diceware is a method for creating strong passphrases by selecting random words from a large word list. Traditionally this was done by rolling physical dice — each roll mapped to a word in a numbered list. Today, cryptographically secure random number generators replace the dice while achieving the same randomness guarantees.

The result is a passphrase that's both strong (high entropy from a large word pool) and memorable (real words you can actually remember). It was invented by Arnold Reinhold in 1995 and is endorsed by security researchers including the EFF.

How many words do you need?

3~27 bitsLow security — avoid for real accounts
4~37 bitsBasic — acceptable for low-risk accounts
5~46 bitsGood — suitable for most online accounts
6~55 bitsStrong — recommended for email and banking
7~65 bitsVery strong — ideal for master passwords
8~74 bitsExcellent — maximum practical security

Passphrase vs Password

Passphrase

  • Easy to remember
  • Easy to type accurately
  • High entropy from word count
  • Resistant to dictionary attacks
  • Good for master passwords

Random Password

  • Difficult to remember
  • Easy to mistype
  • High entropy from character set
  • Best stored in a password manager
  • Good for all other accounts
