Hash Generator
Generate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 hashes instantly. Runs entirely in your browser — your text is never sent to any server.
13 bytes · hashes update instantly as you type
Legacy only — not cryptographically secure
Deprecated — avoid for security use
Recommended — widely used standard
Strongest — best for high-security use
What are hashes used for?
- Data integrity — Verify a file hasn't been tampered with by comparing its hash before and after transfer
- Password storage — Store hashed passwords instead of plaintext (use bcrypt/argon2 for passwords, not raw SHA)
- Digital signatures — Sign documents and verify authenticity in PKI systems
- Checksums — Compare files or detect data corruption in downloads and backups
- Deduplication — Identify duplicate content by comparing hashes without reading the full content
- HMAC authentication — Verify API requests haven't been tampered with in transit
Which algorithm should I use?
✅ Recommended
Modern, secure, and widely supported. Use for file integrity, HMAC, TLS certificates, and general hashing. Output: 64 hex characters.
✅ Recommended
More secure than SHA-256. Faster on 64-bit systems. Use for high-security applications where output size is not a constraint. Output: 128 hex characters.
⚠️ Avoid for security
Deprecated and vulnerable to chosen-prefix collision attacks. Only use for legacy compatibility with older systems.
❌ Not secure
Cryptographically broken. Collisions can be generated in seconds on modern hardware. Acceptable only for non-security checksums and legacy file identification.
Privacy & security
SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 use the browser's built-in crypto.subtle.digest() Web Crypto API. MD5 is computed with a pure JavaScript implementation. Your input text never leaves your browser — no data is transmitted to any server.
