What is a passphrase?
A passphrase is a password made up of several random words strung together — like Granite-River-Falcon-Lotus. Unlike a traditional password, it uses length and word randomness rather than character complexity to achieve security.
Passphrases are recommended by security authorities including NIST (SP 800-63B) because they are both strong and memorable. A four-word passphrase drawn from a large word list has entropy comparable to a 10–12 character random password, yet is far easier to type and remember.
They are especially useful for master passwords (like your password manager's master key) or situations where you need to type a password without copy-paste.
