Why some sites ban special characters
Many older systems and some modern ones restrict passwords to alphanumeric characters only — no symbols. Common reasons include: legacy databases that don't escape special characters safely, mobile apps with awkward symbol keyboards, government and banking systems with strict input validation, and PIN-style systems that only accept digits.
Without symbols, your character pool drops from ~94 to 62 (letters + digits). This means each character provides log₂(62) ≈ 5.95 bits of entropy instead of ~6.55. The difference is modest — a 20-character alphanumeric password still has 119 bits of entropy, which is excellent.
The key compensation: go longer. If a site won't accept symbols, add 4–6 more characters to maintain equivalent security. Our slider goes up to 40 characters for exactly this reason.
