Letters-only passwords: when and why
Some legacy systems, telephone verification systems, and specific enterprise software only accept alphabetic characters in passwords. Others allow letters as part of a broader set but you may choose letters-only for simplicity in certain contexts.
A letters-only password using both cases (52-character pool) provides log₂(52) ≈ 5.7 bits of entropy per character. A 20-character mixed-case letters-only password gives 114 bits — that's excellent security despite having no digits or symbols. The key is going longer to compensate for the smaller pool.
If you need numbers or symbols, use our full password generator. If you need letters and numbers but no symbols, try the no special characters generator.
